They get there from as far as southern Canada, up to three thousand miles, on wings that weigh less than a paper clip, and they arrive around the Day of the Dead, which is why the local villages have always said the monarchs are the souls coming home. In the roost they hang by the millions with their wings shut, the dull undersides turned out so the whole tree looks like it is covered in dead leaves, and they pack so densely that fir branches bend and sometimes break under the weight.
