No words or lettering anywhere in the design

Koalas are built for exactly this. Each forepaw has two thumbs rather than one, both set opposite the remaining three fingers, which is why a koala can close a grip around a branch the way a hand closes around a railing. Their fingertips carry looping ridged prints so close to ours that under a lens the two are hard to tell apart. And at the base of the spine sits a curved pad of cartilage, cushioned by unusually dense rump fur, which turns the fork of a tree into something much closer to a chair.

The Story Behind It

The lorikeet arrived with three invitations. “There's a gathering by the river, something happening in the next tree, and a very interesting noise beyond the hill.” The koala adjusted one paw. “All today?” “Of course. What have you planned?”

The koala looked at the leaves overhead. A patch of sunlight was moving slowly toward his branch. “I'm expecting something.” The lorikeet stayed to see what it was. A breeze arrived. Then the sunlight. Somewhere below, a blossom loosened and fell.

After a while, the bird tucked one foot beneath her feathers. “Perhaps the noise will still be there tomorrow.” The koala made a little room.

Choosing a Color

Gold. Our favorite, and the one shown. Bright and warm, with clear separation around the gray koala and the green leaves.

Light Pink. A gentle backdrop that echoes the blossoms and keeps the whole design soft.

Heliconia. A lively pink pairing, with the gray koala holding the center as a neutral.

Red. Bold and warm. Worth knowing the coral blossoms sit close to this one in tone, so they read softer here than elsewhere.

Black. The strong-contrast option. The koala's pale fur and the brighter flowers both come forward.

Purple. A rich backdrop that contrasts with the foliage and complements the pink blossoms.

Orange. Warm and playful, the liveliest of the nine.

Dark Heather. The most subdued option, a heathered gray that keeps everything quiet.

Royal. A strong blue that gives the coral blossoms their liveliest contrast.

Two honest notes. Orange can show subtle hue shifts depending on the light you are standing in. And because the koala's fur is gray, Dark Heather is the one shade where it loses a little of its definition against the fabric.

The pale shades read as a soft, coordinated arrangement. Black, Purple and Royal turn the koala into a clear silhouette. Both are right, they are just different moods.
