A peony can outlive the person who plants it — a hundred years in the same bed is not unusual. The ants on the buds aren’t opening them; they’re eating the sugar the bud leaks while it waits. Painted here at every stage: the tight bud, the full bloom, and the week it bows under its own weight after rain.

Poppy seed can lie in the ground for decades and wake up the moment the soil is turned, which is why fields that were churned up in the First World War bloomed red the next spring. Four Designs
A tulip keeps growing after it’s cut — the stem lengthens in the vase and leans toward the window, which is why an arrangement never looks the same two mornings running. Ours are painted in a row, under a late snow, in a pair of garden boots, and beside a wind chime.
June’s Flower
Rose fossils go back thirty-five million years, and the hips that follow the flower hold more vitamin C than an orange. These are the old garden roses — Rosa gallica, climbers, apricot cabbage roses — painted with the things that visit them: a hummingbird, a pair of doves, a lute left in the garden.

Four Designs
The name comes from the Latin lavare, to wash — the Romans put it in the bath. Bees prefer it to almost anything else in the border, and it’s the one flower here that comes stitched as well as painted: a sprig on a corduroy cap, for the person whose size you don’t know.
