Garment-Dyed Sweatshirt · Ten Colors
He is gone by the end of September. The roses keep his place.
Garment-dyed 9.5 oz heavyweight fleece, soft from the first wear.
A male ruby-throated hummingbird hovers at the left of the arrangement, wings raised, bill already at a white jasmine blossom. A deep red rose opens to his right and a blush pink rose below, with tight red rosebuds, white jasmine and glossy dark green leaves filling the space between them. He is arriving at the flowers, not perched among them.
The Design
Large front-centered chest print — not a back print
Style: vintage botanical illustration — fine feather, petal and leaf detail with layered, softly shaded colour rather than a flat modern graphic
Technique: a printed graphic — the ink sits in the fleece, straight onto the garment color with no background panel, and nothing is stitched or sewn on
A male ruby-throated hummingbird upper left — iridescent green back and crown, a brilliant red throat, pale breast and a long straight bill
Wings raised and spread in a hover, not folded: he is in flight, mid-approach
A deep red rose at the right and a blush pink rose below, both fully open, with tight red rosebuds above and to the left
White five-petalled jasmine with golden stamens scattered through, and glossy dark green leaves filling behind
Printed straight onto the garment color, with no panel, badge or frame behind the artwork
No words or lettering anywhere in the design
The same illustration carried across ten garment-dyed grounds.
A ruby-throated hummingbird cannot afford to stay warm all night. On a cold one he drops into torpor: the heart rate falls from something near twelve hundred beats a minute to around fifty, breathing becomes intermittent, and body temperature slides from about 105°F down towards the air around him. He hangs there, cold and unresponsive, sometimes upside down, and a person finding him would think he was dead. It can take him the better part of an hour to come back up in the morning — shivering his flight muscles warm before the first flower of the day.
The Story Behind It
✦ ✦ ✦
The last week of September is the one she watches. Not for anything in particular — he does not announce it. There is simply a morning when the jasmine is not being worked, and that is that until spring.
She leaves the feeder up two more weeks every year, for stragglers coming down from further north, and then she washes it and puts it in the shed.
The roses go on without him. They carry on into November some years, and the hips stay on the canes right through the cold, and the whole arrangement sits there being a garden with nobody visiting it.
Then it is May, and he is back at the same bush on the same circuit as though no distance had been covered at all.
✦ ✦ ✦
Wear it through the months he is away.
The print runs large and centered on the chest, straight onto the garment color — no panel, no frame, not a back print.
A thoughtful gift for rose growers, hummingbird feeders, birders counting down to the first of May, and anyone whose garden has a regular who is not there yet.

Choosing a Color
Blue Jean. Washed mid-blue, and the deepest ground in this run. The bird's iridescent green back separates furthest here.
Butter. Soft warm yellow. It picks up the golden stamens in the jasmine and warms every green down a step.
Chalky Mint. Pale green-grey. The foliage settles into it and both roses come forward together.
Chambray. Light blue, cooler and paler than Blue Jean. The red rose is at its loudest against it.
Grey. Neutral heather grey — the most everyday of the ten, and the one that reads closest to a photograph.
Light Green. Soft leaf green. The glossy foliage almost belongs to the shirt, which leaves the roses and the bird doing all the work.
Orchid. Soft lilac-pink. The blush rose sits close to it, so the red rose and the white jasmine carry the picture.
Watermelon. Warm coral pink, and the boldest ground here. The white jasmine is what keeps the blush rose from dissolving into it.
White. Clean and bright, the way a botanical plate is printed. Every red, green and blush is at full strength and nothing is tinted.
Terracotta. Warm clay orange. Rich and unexpected, and the one where the bird's red throat reads warmest.
Two honest notes. There is no dark ground in this run at all — Blue Jean and Grey are the deepest of the ten, and everything else is light or mid-toned. The bird's green back and red throat read most lit against a genuinely dark shirt, and on this blank that option does not exist; the tee version of the same drawing runs Espresso and Blue Spruce if that is the one you want. And Terracotta runs L to 3XL only; it is not made in S or M.
Actual garment color may vary a little from the images. Every monitor and phone screen renders color differently, and no two people see it quite the same way.
