Garment-Dyed Sweatshirt · Eight Colors
Letting go can look a lot like taking flight.
Garment-dyed 9.5 oz heavyweight brushed fleece, soft from the first wear.
Look closer — those aren't petals leaving. A golden sunflower in full watercolor bloom, letting go one petal at a time, and every petal lifting off as a butterfly: a whole drift of them, gold and cream, riding the wind off the edge of the flower. Soft green leaves and a few wild grasses at the stem. The same design as our best-loved sunflower tee, now on a heavyweight crewneck for the months when the sunflowers are gone and you'd like to keep one anyway.
The Design
Large front-centered chest print — not a back print
Subject: a golden sunflower whose petals lift away as butterflies, with leaves and wild grasses
Style: soft, layered watercolor with a vintage botanical-print warmth
No text. There is no lettering, slogan or wordmark anywhere in this design
Technique: a printed graphic — the ink sits in the fleece, straight onto the garment color with no background panel, and nothing is stitched or sewn on
The same sunflower carried across eight garment-dyed grounds.
A young sunflower follows the sun across the sky all day, then turns back east through the night to be waiting when it rises. Once she's fully grown she stops turning — and settles facing east for good, so the morning warms her first and the bees arrive sooner. By the end of August the petals go, one at a time, and the heavy head bows toward the ground to drop its seeds where the next ones will grow. Nothing about a sunflower's ending is careless. Even her letting go is a decision.
The Story Behind It
✦ ✦ ✦
Her mother planted sunflowers along the back fence every May, a whole row of them, and by August they stood taller than the fence and taller than her father, and the yard felt like it had a crowd in it. She loved them in July. She hated them in September, when the petals started to go, and she would run out in the morning to pick the fallen ones off the grass as if she could put them back.
Her mother let her do it for a year or two. Then one morning she came out with her coffee, stood beside her, and said: look where they're going. And she looked — and the petals weren't falling, they were leaving. Small yellow butterflies, dozens of them, lifting off the heads of the flowers and going over the fence toward wherever it was they went next. The flower wasn't losing anything. It was sending something off.
She plants her own row now, along her own fence. She still goes out in September. She doesn't pick anything up.
✦ ✦ ✦
Wear it for everything you've let go of that turned out to have wings.
The print runs large and centered on the chest, straight onto the garment color — no panel, no frame, not a back print.
A thoughtful gift for the one who plants sunflowers every spring, keeps a vase of them on the table until the last petal, and would rather have the sun on a sweatshirt than wait for it to come back. Heavy enough for the cold months, and nothing on it ties it to a holiday — it wears from the first frost to the first bloom.

80% ring-spun US cotton, 20% polyester, 9.5 oz heavyweight — substantial, and warm enough to be the layer rather than something under one
Three-end fleece with a 100% cotton face and a brushed fleece interior, warmer than a lighter French terry

Holds its shape through the wash, with almost no shrinkage at home
The graphic will not crack or peel. It is printed flat into the face of the fleece — no heavy vinyl patch, no rubbery texture, nothing to pull loose
Choosing a Color
The design is golden yellow, warm brown at the center, cream butterflies and soft green leaves. Gold shows on everything — the darks make it glow, the lights make it a summer morning.
Pepper. A soft washed black, closer to charcoal than jet. The sunflower lights up against it like late sun on a dark fence, which is why the page opens on it — and why it's the color people buy the tee in.
Blue Spruce. Deep evergreen. Gold on dark green is the sunflower's own palette turned inside out — rich, and the most autumn of the eight.
Grey. A light heathered grey. Calm and neutral; the sunflower does all the talking.
White. A soft, warm off-white rather than a bright optic white. The watercolor reads exactly like the painting on this one.
Light Green. Soft sage. The leaves settle in and the gold steps forward — a gentle garden feel.
Chambray. The palest washed blue, like a clear morning sky. Yellow on pale blue is the classic sunflower pairing.
Blue Jean. A light washed denim. Gold sits opposite blue on the wheel, so the flower pops here more than anywhere, and it's the easiest to wear year round.
Denim. A dark washed indigo — the closest to the Navy that sells on the tee. Moody and rich; the gold carries it.
Garment-dyed colors look softer and more muted in person than on a screen, and each piece varies slightly. That lived-in tone is part of the charm.
Sizing
A relaxed unisex cut that most people wear true to size. Size down one for a closer fit.
Adult sizes only, S to 3XL. Between sizes? We will make it right, free.
