In winter, backyard birds stop keeping to their own kind. Chickadees form the core of a mixed flock and the others follow them from tree to tree, because a chickadee's alarm call is the most reliable warning in the woods — even cardinals and bluebirds, who do not speak chickadee, have learned what it means. The cardinal pair stays together year-round; in a few months he will be cracking sunflower seeds and passing them to her, bill to bill, which is the closest thing in the backyard to a kiss. Four species on one branch is not a painter's wish. It is any feeder, on any cold morning, in the ten minutes before the squirrel arrives.
The Story Behind It

She kept a list on the side of the refrigerator, in pencil, under a magnet shaped like a pear. Not a life list — she would have laughed at that — just who had come to the feeder that day. Most days it said chickadees and nothing else. Some days it said chickadees, cardinals. On the good days there was a third line.
The morning the bluebird came, she did not write anything. She stood at the window with the pencil in her hand and watched four different birds share the same branch of the dogwood for the better part of a minute, none of them in a hurry, none of them bothered by the others, and when they left she realized she had been holding her breath. She put the pencil down. Some days you do not need to write it down to remember it.

Choosing a Color
