Garment-Dyed Tee · Thirteen Colors · The Quiet Line
A great blue heron in the reeds, drawn in a few flowing white lines — the whole bird in the fewest strokes it takes to know it is a heron. No text.
Garment-dyed 6.1 oz ring-spun cotton, soft from the first wear.
The heron, up close and on the shirt.
This is the quiet version of our heron. Where the Great Blue Heron Sweatshirt paints every feather, this one keeps only the shape: the long S of the neck, the dagger bill, the plume trailing off the back of the head, the weight settled on one leg, and a few blades of marsh grass at the feet. It is drawn in sweeping white strokes that thicken and thin like a brush — a single color, printed straight onto the garment dye, so on a dark shirt it reads like chalk on slate. Nothing else on the shirt. No text, no border, no slogan.
The Design
Tall front-centered chest print — not a back print
Subject: a great blue heron standing among reeds
Style: minimalist flowing line art in a single color — white on every shirt — with calligraphic strokes that swell and taper
No text. There is no lettering, slogan, place name or wordmark anywhere in this design
Technique: a printed graphic — one color of ink laid flat into the cotton, no background panel, nothing stitched or sewn on
Shown in Black. One color, straight onto the garment — no panel, no frame, not a back print.
A heron is a bird you can draw in three lines because it is a bird that holds still long enough to be drawn. It hunts by standing — an hour in cold water with the neck coiled, then one strike faster than you can follow — and that stillness is the whole character of the animal, which is why a few strokes are enough and a hundred would not add anything. The great blue is the largest heron in North America, four feet tall on a six-foot wingspan and only five or six pounds, almost all of it feather and air. It flies with its neck folded back onto its shoulders; a crane flies with its neck straight out, which is the quickest way to tell them apart overhead. And it does not leave when the water freezes. One open pool below a culvert is enough, and it will be standing in it in January.
The Story Behind It
✦ ✦ ✦
She had drawn the same heron for twenty years. It stood at the bend of the creek behind the house most mornings, and most mornings she had a pencil and the back of something — an envelope, a receipt, the margin of the crossword — and she drew it. Not well, at first. There were a lot of herons that looked like coat racks.
What changed was not her hand. It was that she stopped trying to get all of it. Somewhere around the tenth year she noticed she was drawing less and the bird was getting more like itself: the neck in one curve, the bill in one stroke, the legs in two, and stop. Her daughter found a shoebox of them and laid them out on the kitchen table in order, and you could watch twenty years of a person learning to leave things out.
The last one in the box was five lines. Her daughter had it framed. She still goes down to the bend most mornings, and most mornings the heron is there, and she mostly just looks at it now.
✦ ✦ ✦
Wear it for the bend in the creek, and for learning to leave things out.
A gift for the birder who would rather not wear a bird that shouts, for the kayaker or fly-fisher who shares the river with one, for anyone who likes a dark tee with a single clean mark on it, or for the person who has stood at a window and watched a heron do nothing for a very long time. It is the simplest thing we make, on purpose — one color, no words, and the price to match. Pair it with the Great Blue Heron Sweatshirt for the same bird painted in full.

Choosing a Color
The heron is white on every shirt, so this one is all about the ground. The darker the dye, the sharper the line; the mid tones turn it softer, like chalk on a worn board.
Black, Pepper and Graphite. The sharpest contrast — true black, a soft washed black, and a deep charcoal grey. The line looks drawn on slate. Start here.
Navy and Blue Spruce. Deep washed blue and deep evergreen — the marsh at dusk. The two most natural grounds for a heron.
Moss and Light Green. Olive and soft sage — reeds in summer. Moss keeps the contrast; Light Green is the quietest of the thirteen.
Espresso and Blue Jean. Deep brown and mid denim. Espresso is warm and dramatic; Blue Jean is the everyday one.
Berry, Brick, Chili and Red. A washed plum (the hero photo), a dusty rust, a muted red and a true red — the unexpected ones, where a white heron turns into a graphic rather than a nature print.
Garment-dyed colors look softer and more muted in person than on a screen, and each piece varies slightly. That lived-in tone is part of the charm.
