Garment-Dyed Cotton Tee · Twelve Colors · Designed in Colorado
A great horned owl on a snow-dusted branch, turned to look straight at you — the one bird that is awake when you are not.
Garment-dyed 6.1 oz ring-spun cotton, soft from the first wear.
A great horned owl, body turned to the side and head swung round to face you, the way they do when they have already seen you and are deciding whether you matter. Ear tufts up. Yellow eyes. The white throat patch, the finely barred breast, the mottled brown-and-buff wing folded tight, and the big feathered feet gripping a bare branch with a line of snow along the top. Painted in watercolor with soft paper grain, every bar and feather edge where a field guide would put it, and no painted background, no moon — so the shirt color is the winter dark behind the bird. No text, no slogan.
The Design
Large front-centered chest print — not a back print
Subject: a single great horned owl perched on a snow-dusted bare branch, head turned to the viewer
Style: watercolor wildlife illustration with soft paper grain — field-guide accurate, no moon, no cartoon
No text. There is no lettering, slogan or wordmark anywhere in this design
Technique: a printed graphic — the ink sits in the cotton, straight onto the garment color with no background panel, and nothing is stitched or sewn on
Shown in Ivory. The print runs large and centered on the chest, straight onto the garment color — no panel, no frame, not a back print.
The great horned owl is the one you hear and almost never see: the deep, five-note hoot from the pines after dark, from November on, when they are already courting while everything else is just trying to stay warm. They are the first bird to nest each year, sitting on eggs in January with snow on their backs. If you have ever stood in the yard at night, breath showing, trying to work out which tree it was in — this is that bird, and it was watching you the whole time.
The Story Behind It
✦ ✦ ✦
She worked nights for eleven years — the hospital, then the dispatch desk — and came home every morning in the dark, up the same gravel drive, under the same big cottonwood. The first winter she heard it: a low hoot, twice, then three more, from somewhere up in the branches. She stopped the car with the engine running and listened until it went quiet.
It was there most mornings after that. She never saw it, only heard it, and started saying good morning to the tree out of habit. Then one January, with snow on everything, she looked up at the right moment and there it was on the low branch — huge, tufted, turned all the way round to look at her with those eyes. It did not fly. She did not move. The two of them, coming off the same shift.
She works days now. She still slows down under the cottonwood.
✦ ✦ ✦
Wear it for everyone who keeps the night shift, feathered or otherwise.
A gift for the birder, the night-shift nurse, the one who knows the hoot from the back porch, the friend who got up at 4 a.m. for the owl prowl, or anyone who has ever been looked at by one and remembered it. It is a winter design without being a holiday joke — no moon, no "night owl" lettering — so it goes on in late October and keeps going through the thaw. Pair it with the Great Horned Owl Sweatshirt — the same owl in 9.5 oz fleece for the colder half of the season.

Choosing a Color
The design is mottled brown and buff with a white throat, yellow eyes and a snow-lined branch — and no painted background, so the shirt color is the night behind the owl.
Pepper. A soft washed black, closer to charcoal. The owl at night: the eyes and the snow jump, the rest comes forward slowly. The one to start with.
Black. The highest contrast — every feather edge outlined, the yellow eyes at full strength.
Navy. Deep washed navy. The owl at dusk; the buff breast and white throat do the work.
Grey. A soft heathered grey. Winter daylight — every bar on the breast reads, and it wears with everything.
Espresso. Warm dark brown. The owl settles into the shirt and the eyes and snow carry it — the quiet one, for the wearer who already knows what it is.
Blue Jean. A light washed denim. Brown owl on blue is a classic field-guide pairing, and the easiest one to wear past winter.
Chambray. The palest washed blue — the owl against a winter morning sky.
Chili. A deep washed red. Unexpected, and it works: the browns go rich against it, and it reads as autumn rather than Christmas.
Mustard. Warm golden yellow, like the eyes. The most autumn of the twelve — owl on October.
Orchid. A pale dusty lavender-pink. The softest ground here, and the one that reads least like a hunting-lodge print.
Ivory. A warm off-white that lets the buff and brown glow rather than shout. The gentlest, and the easiest to give.
White. The crispest of the twelve — the owl in snow, every feather edge outlined.
Garment-dyed colors look softer and more muted in person than on a screen, and each piece varies slightly. That lived-in tone is part of the charm.
