Crane and magnolia print · 100% ring-spun cotton · eight garment-dyed colors · Comfort Colors 1717 · printed graphic, nothing stitched on
Garment-Dyed Tee · Eight Colors · Designed in Colorado
A red-crowned crane lifting its wings among pink magnolia blossoms — painted in soft botanical color with no text.
Garment-dyed 6.1 oz ring-spun cotton, soft from the first wear.
The crane and the magnolias, up close and on the shirt.
A red-crowned crane caught mid-gesture — wings lifted and spread, the long neck curving down, the black flight feathers fanned against white plumage and the small red cap that gives the bird its name. Around it, a branch of saucer magnolia in full flower: thick pink-and-white petals, a few buds still closed, dark leaves just coming in. The whole thing is drawn with long clean lines and soft botanical color, the way a plate in an old flora would do it. No background and no border — the shirt color is the sky behind the branch. No text, no slogan.
The Design
Large front-centered chest print — not a back print
Subject: a red-crowned crane with wings raised among flowering magnolia branches
Style: botanical illustration — long clean lines, soft layered color, a little of the East Asian scroll painting in the composition
No text. There is no lettering, slogan, place name or wordmark anywhere in this design
Technique: a printed graphic — the ink sits in the cotton, straight onto the garment color with no background panel, and nothing is stitched or sewn on
Shown in Espresso. The print sits large and centered on the chest, straight onto the garment color — no panel, no frame, not a back print.
Magnolias are among the oldest flowering plants still growing. They appeared before bees existed, so they are pollinated by beetles instead — which is why the petals are so thick and the flower is built to be walked on. Cranes are among the oldest lineages of birds still living, and they have kept the same habits the whole way: the same wintering grounds, the same long calls carrying for miles, the same dances, which both sexes do, all year, for no reason anyone has proved beyond that they seem to like it. The red-crowned crane is the one on the scrolls and the kimono silks, the symbol of long life and a faithful marriage in Japan, China and Korea — they pair for life, and a pair will dance together for decades. Neither the flower nor the bird has needed much revision.
The Story Behind It
✦ ✦ ✦
The magnolia in her grandmother's yard was older than the house. Every March it did the same thing: bloomed all at once, enormous and pink, a week before it was safe to, and every third year a late frost took the whole show in a night and left the lawn covered in brown petals. Her grandmother never once complained about it. She said a tree that old had earned the right to be early.
On the wall above the kitchen table there was a scroll her grandfather had brought back from Japan in 1952 — two cranes, wings up, dancing. She had asked once what it meant and her grandmother said, a long life and a good marriage, and then, after a moment, we got both.
The tree is still there. The house belongs to someone else now, but she drives past it every March to see whether it has been early again, and it always has.
✦ ✦ ✦
Wear it for the tree that has earned the right to be early, and for the two who got both.
A gift for a long marriage or a milestone anniversary, for a grandmother with a magnolia in the yard, for anyone who grew up with a crane scroll on the wall, for the birder who wants something more graceful than a cardinal, or for anyone who simply wants a bird and a flower on a shirt and nothing written on it. Pair it with the Great Blue Heron Sweatshirt for the other long-legged bird that stands still.

Choosing a Color
The design is white, black, pink and green with a touch of red — and no painted background, so the shirt color is the sky behind the branch. The white crane needs a little contrast; these are the ones to start with.
Grey. A soft washed grey, the one on the hero photo. The crane's white reads cleanly and the pink magnolias glow — the most balanced of the eight.
Espresso. Deep washed brown. The scroll-painting look: the white bird and pink blossoms float on a dark ground, and the black wing feathers nearly disappear into it.
Bay. A soft sage green. The branch looks like it is growing out of the shirt; the pink and the green sit together the way they do in a garden.
Blossom and Orchid. Pale pink and soft lilac — the magnolias match the shirt and the crane becomes the whole picture. The prettiest two, and the most spring.
Mustard. Warm gold. Unexpected and strong — pink against mustard is the combination on old Japanese textiles.
White and Ivory. The field-guide pages, where the black flight feathers and the dark leaves draw the crane and the magnolias carry the color.
Garment-dyed colors look softer and more muted in person than on a screen, and each piece varies slightly. That lived-in tone is part of the charm.
