Garment-Dyed Sweatshirt · Eight Colors · Designed in Colorado
A shaggy Highland cow in the first snow of the year, looking straight at you.
Shown in Chambray. Garment-dyed 9.5 oz heavyweight brushed fleece, soft from the first wear.
A ginger-red Highland cow, head and shoulders, with its long fringe falling over its eyes and a pair of wide pale horns. Snow has settled on the fringe and across its back, there's a soft cloud of breath in the cold air, and snow is still falling. A snow-covered pine bough leans in on one side and a few sprigs of red winter berries sit low on the other — the one note of red. Painted in the manner of a vintage winter poster or an old Christmas card, soft paper grain and warm gouache, with no painted sky, so the shirt color becomes the winter sky behind it. No text, no slogan, no plaid scarf — just the cow.
The Design
Large front-centered chest print — not a back print
Subject: a shaggy Highland cow portrait with snow on its fringe, a snowy pine bough and red winter berries
Style: painted vintage winter-poster illustration with soft paper grain
No text. There is no lettering, slogan or wordmark anywhere in this design
Technique: a printed graphic — the ink sits in the fleece, straight onto the garment color with no background panel, and nothing is stitched or sewn on
Shown in Pepper. The same cow on eight garment-dyed grounds — the shirt color becomes the sky.
Highland cattle were bred for the Scottish hills, where the weather is the main event, and the long double coat is the reason they stand out in a snowstorm looking faintly pleased about it. The fringe isn't for show either — it keeps the snow and the midges out of their eyes. So when the snow settles on a Highland cow, it simply stays there, and the cow goes on chewing. That's the whole appeal: the calmest animal on the hill on the worst day of the year.
The Story Behind It
✦ ✦ ✦
The farm at the end of her road kept two Highland cows in the field by the fence, and every winter morning on the way to the school bus she stopped to say good morning to the ginger one. It never came over. It just stood there in the snow with its fringe over its eyes, chewing, while she talked at it about whatever was on her mind — and it never once seemed to disagree.
She told that cow things she didn't tell anyone. On the bad mornings she stood there a little longer. On the worst one, the first winter after her dad, she stood there until the bus had gone, and the cow walked the length of the fence and stood with her, breath steaming in the cold, and said nothing, which was exactly right.
She's grown now, and lives in a city with no fences. But when the first snow comes she still thinks of the ginger one — fringe white with snow, going nowhere, keeping her company.
✦ ✦ ✦
Wear it for the ones who stand with you in the cold and don't need to say anything.
The print runs large and centered on the chest, straight onto the garment color — no panel, no frame, not a back print.
A gift for the Highland cow person — there is always one — the farmhouse decorator, the grandmother who keeps a cow calendar in the kitchen, or anyone who would rather be in a field than a meeting. It's a winter design rather than a Christmas one: the snow and the berries make it a gift for December, but nothing on it ties it to a holiday, so it's worn from the first snow to the last.

Fabric
Comfort Colors 1566 garment-dyed crewneck sweatshirt
80% ring-spun US cotton, 20% polyester, 9.5 oz heavyweight — substantial, and warm enough to be the layer rather than something under one
Three-end fleece with a 100% cotton face and a brushed fleece interior, warmer than a lighter French terry
Dyed after the garment is sewn, using salt-free pigment dyes; OEKO-TEX certified
Holds its shape through the wash, with almost no shrinkage at home
The graphic will not crack or peel. It is printed flat into the face of the fleece — no heavy vinyl patch, no rubbery texture, nothing to pull loose
Choosing a Color
The design is warm russet fur, cream snow, pale horns, deep pine green and a few red berries — with no painted sky, so the shirt color is the sky. A warm cow on a cold ground is the poster pairing, and the snow on the fringe outlines it on the dark colors, so this one works on all eight.
Chambray. The palest washed blue — a clear cold morning. Russet on ice-blue is the classic winter poster, and it's the one on the hero photo.
Grey. A light heathered grey, a snow sky. Calm and neutral, and the easiest of the eight to give.
Blue Jean. A light washed denim. Warm fur against blue, and the easiest to wear year round.
Denim. A dark washed indigo — the field at dusk. The cow glows against it. Moody and rich.
Pepper. A soft washed black, closer to charcoal than jet. The snow on the fringe and the pale horns do the work, and the russet fur looks warmest of all here.
Blue Spruce. Deep evergreen, the color of the pine in the print. The most Highland of the eight — russet cow, dark green hill.
Light Green. Soft sage. A gentler, farmhouse feel; the berries step forward.
White. A soft, warm off-white. The snow melts into the shirt and the cow itself carries it — the lightest, most pared-back version of the eight.
Garment-dyed colors look softer and more muted in person than on a screen, and each piece varies slightly. That lived-in tone is part of the charm.
