Garment-Dyed Sweatshirt · Four Dark Colors
The board said CLOSED at seven. Nobody announced the change.
A mountain scene drawn in white line only. A high snow-capped peak fills the top of the print, and below it alpine chalets step up the terraced slopes — balconied upper storeys, shuttered windows, deep snow along every roof. Two larger chalets sit in the foreground with a cleared track and a post-and-rail fence curving between them, snow-laden conifers close both edges, and six large snowflakes fall across the sky above the summit.
The Design
Large front-centered chest print — not a back print
Style: white single-colour line art — a scene drawn in fine outline, with no fill, no shading and no second ink colour anywhere in it
Technique: a printed graphic — the ink sits in the fleece, straight onto the garment color with no background panel, and nothing is stitched or sewn on
Flat white ink only — no foil, no glitter, no metallic and no raised puff print
A high snow-capped peak filling the upper half of the drawing, with lower ridges falling away to either side
Alpine chalets stepped up the terraced slopes below it — balconied upper storeys, shuttered windows and deep snow along every roof
Two larger chalets in the foreground, one to each side, with the path running between them
Tall snow-laden conifers framing both edges and filling the gaps between the buildings
A post-and-rail fence and a cleared track curving across the bottom of the scene
Six large many-pointed snowflakes falling across the sky above the peak, with smaller flakes between them
Printed straight onto the garment color, with no panel, badge or frame behind the artwork
No words or lettering anywhere in the design
There is a wind in the Alps that undoes a scene like this one in an afternoon. When damp air is forced up the windward side of a range it drops its moisture as rain or snow, and the air that comes down the far side is both drier and — because descending air is compressed — considerably warmer than it started. The Alpine name for it is the föhn, and it can lift the temperature in a valley by fifteen or twenty degrees in a matter of hours, strip a pass bare and set the roofs dripping while the peak above is still white. North America has the same wind coming off the Rockies and gave it a blunter name: the Chinook, which the plains settlers called the snow eater. Same physics, same unnerving speed, and the reason a road that was shut at breakfast can be open by lunch.
The Story Behind It
✦ ✦ ✦
The board at the bottom of the valley said CLOSED when we went to bed and it still said CLOSED at seven.
By nine the eaves had started dripping, which nobody trusted. By half past ten there was bare wet tarmac showing through in the lay-by, and the man who runs the café came out and looked at it for a while without saying anything, which is the local equivalent of an announcement.
They flipped the board a little before noon. Nothing was said about it. The snow was still a foot deep on every roof up the slope and the peak hadn't changed at all — it was only the road that had given up.
We went over in the afternoon with the windows down, in February, which is not a thing you forget.
✦ ✦ ✦
Wear it for the mornings the road gives up before the mountain does.
A thoughtful gift for skiers and the people who go with them but don't ski, anyone who has waited out a closed pass, and the ones who would rather look at a mountain than climb it.

Choosing a Color
Blue Spruce. Deep botanical green — the colour of the conifers in the drawing. The quietest of the four and the easiest to wear somewhere that is not a mountain.
Crimson. Deep true red, and the loudest of the four. The most openly festive, and the one ground where the white reads warm rather than cold.
Denim. Washed mid-blue, the lightest ground here. Reads like late afternoon on snow rather than full night.
Pepper. Deep charcoal, and the one the drawing was made for. The white sits hardest against it and the peak carries all the way to the top of the print.
One honest note, and it is the point of this one. Every ground in this run is dark or mid-toned, and there is no white, cream or pale option at all. That is deliberate rather than an omission — the drawing is white ink and nothing else, so a pale shirt would leave it with nothing to sit against. If you want this design on a light garment, it is not this product.
Actual garment color may vary a little from the images. Every monitor and phone screen renders color differently, and no two people see it quite the same way.
