Blue & White Winter Still Life · Eleven Colors
Put the kettle on first.
Heavyweight 9.5 oz fleece with a brushed interior, garment-dyed and soft from the first wear.
A cream jar painted all over in cobalt leaves and ferns stands open and full of honey, with a wooden dipper laid across the rim and a thread of it still running back into the pot. Its matching lid leans beside it, patterned with pinecones and finished with a deep blue knob. On a gilt-edged blue plate below sits a thick piece of honeycomb, and next to it a lemon cut clean through. White camellias, plum hellebores, pinecones, blue-black berries and snow-dusted fir close around the whole arrangement.
The Design
Large front-centered chest print — not a back print
Style: vintage still-life illustration in the blue and white china tradition — fine cobalt linework and layered botanicals rather than a flat modern graphic
Technique: a printed graphic, not embroidery, not applique and not an inset or embellished collar
The honeycomb is drawn, not knitted. This is a printed picture of honeycomb on a plate — not a honeycomb knit, a waffle texture or a quilted stitch. The sweatshirt itself is smooth brushed fleece.
A cream transferware jar at the centre, patterned in cobalt leaves and ferns, open and full of honey
A wooden dipper resting across the rim, with honey running from it
The matching lid leaning at the side, patterned with pinecones, with a deep blue knob
Honeycomb on a gilt-edged blue plate, and a lemon cut through, below the jar
White camellias, plum hellebores, pinecones, blue-black berries and snow-dusted fir framing it
Printed straight onto the garment color, with no panel, badge or frame behind the artwork
A plain round-neck crewneck pullover: no hood, no front pocket
No words or lettering anywhere in the design
Honey keeps because almost nothing can live in it. The water content is fanned down below a fifth inside the comb, and the sugar that remains pulls moisture out of any spore that lands — so it is both too dry and too acidic for spoilage to take hold. Sealed jars found in Egyptian tombs were still honey three thousand years later. The lemon is the other half of the old remedy and the one that will not keep: honey holds, citrus fades, and the pairing only works because somebody cut the lemon that afternoon.
The Story Behind It
✦ ✦ ✦
She had a list, and the list had been getting longer since Tuesday. Then her neighbour knocked with half a jar of honey from the summer before, and no particular reason for coming.
“I can’t stop. I’ve got the whole afternoon planned.” — “Of course.” — “Though I suppose the kettle’s already on.”
They got through two cups and most of a lemon. The honeycomb went on the good plate because it was the only one that would hold it. At some point the list went face down on the counter, which is a thing you do deliberately.
Nothing on it was urgent. Most of it is still there. She does not remember a single item, and she remembers the afternoon exactly.
✦ ✦ ✦
Wear it for the afternoons that turn out better than the plan.
A thoughtful gift for anyone who loves blue and white china, winter flowers, and a kitchen that smells of lemon and tea.

Choosing a Color
Blue Spruce. Our favorite of the eleven. A deep evergreen that runs with the frosted fir in the design and makes the honey, the comb and the gilt rim on the plate glow the way they are meant to.
White. The crispest separation. Every cobalt line on the jar stands clear, and the cream of the china reads as china rather than as shirt.
Pepper. Dark charcoal, and the strongest definition of the lot. The white camellias and the pale jar carry the whole picture against it.
Denim. A deep blue that echoes the cobalt pattern for a tonal reading, with the honey and the lemon doing all the lifting.
Crimson. A rich seasonal red. The most festive of the eleven, and it throws the cream and gold forward hard.
Chambray. Lighter blue that sits with the jar’s pattern while leaving the honey warm against it.
Orchid. Soft lilac that picks up the plum hellebores for the most romantic version.
Terracotta. Warm clay, closest in temperature to the honey itself, for the most rustic reading.
Butter. Soft pale yellow that runs with the honey and the lemon and makes the cobalt the only cool thing in the picture.
Chalky Mint. A frosty pale green that sits with the fir and keeps the camellias bright.
Light Green. A soft botanical ground, the gentlest of the eleven.
Two honest notes. The gold — the honey, the comb and the gilt plate rim — reads strongest on the darks: Blue Spruce, Pepper, Denim and Crimson. And on Denim and Chambray the cobalt pattern on the jar sits in the same blue family as the shirt, so the jar reads more softly while the honey and the lemon carry the contrast.
Actual garment color may vary a little from the images. Every monitor and phone screen renders color differently, and no two people see it quite the same way.
