Her turn. Stand back.
Heavyweight 9.5 oz fleece, garment-dyed and soft from the first wear.
An ornate spinning top decorated in deep blue, cream and gold rests among evergreen sprigs, delicate white snowdrops, pink flowers and pale berries. Decorative floral patterns cover the toy itself, and a loose cord curls beneath its pointed tip, giving the arrangement a sense of movement — nostalgic toy illustration meeting winter botanicals, with the fine ornamental detail of a treasured childhood keepsake.
The Design
Large front-centered chest print — not a back print
A single spinning top at the centre, upright on its pointed tip, in deep blue, cream and gold
Decorative floral patterning runs over the body of the top itself, band by band
A loose cord curls out from beneath the tip and trails across the lower part of the arrangement
The botanicals sit around and behind the toy — evergreen sprigs, white snowdrops, pink flowers and pale berries filling the space at either side
Printed straight onto the garment color, with no panel, badge or frame behind the artwork
Style: nostalgic vintage toy illustration set against winter botanicals — fine ornamental linework and softly shaded detail, a painted hand-drawn feel rather than a flat graphic
Technique: a printed graphic — the ink sits in the fleece, straight onto the garment color with no background panel, and nothing is stitched or sewn on
No words or lettering anywhere in the design
Also in Pepper, a near-black ground that throws the cream, gold and snowdrops forward.
A spinning top does not resist gravity so much as redirect it. Gravity pulls down on a tilted top, which ought to topple it — but because the top is already spinning, that pull turns instead into a slow rotation of the axis itself, a drift called precession. So the top leans, and then circles, rather than falling. As friction bleeds the spin away the circling widens and quickens, which is why the last few seconds are a wobble: the top running out of the trick. Tops turn up in the archaeology of almost every culture that had cord and something to carve, which is probably because the physics comes free. You only have to spin it.
The Story Behind It
✦ ✦ ✦
The spinning top came out of a biscuit tin with three marbles and a key nobody recognized. Her grandson tried it first. It wobbled into the fruit bowl. “Probably broken,” he said.
She moved the oranges, wound the cord, and cleared a space on the table. The top landed neatly and began to hum. He leaned closer.
“Where did you learn that?” — “Before you started explaining everything to me.”
They watched it turn until its colors blurred together. Then he fetched a pencil and wrote their names on the back of an envelope. “What’s that for?” — “Scores.”
She took off her cardigan. By lunchtime the oranges were on the windowsill, and neither of them had mentioned television.

Wear it for the things you remember how to enjoy.
The print runs large and centered on the chest, straight onto the garment color — no panel, no frame, not a back print.

Choosing a Color
White — the lightest, most delicate setting, keeping the blue-and-gold decoration at its clearest and the snowdrops crisp.
Pepper — near-black, the strongest contrast on the page: the cream ornamentation, the snowdrops and the pale berries all come forward.
Crimson — deep red, the festive option, set against the cream, gold and deep blue of the toy.
Blue Spruce — a deep forest green that turns the sprigs and snowdrops into a woodland setting, with the gold carrying the contrast.
Denim — a deeper blue that sits close to the top’s own blue panels, so the cream, the gold and the pink blooms do the lifting.
Butter — soft pale yellow, echoing the golden detail and warming the deep blue bands.
Watermelon — a bright warm pink that picks up the pink flowers and gives the nostalgic subject a cheerful ground.
Chambray — a pale blue setting that keeps the darker decorative panels prominent.
Blue Jean — mid blue, the most coordinated reading of the design, relaxed and of a piece.
Chalky Mint — a frosty pale green, cool against the warm gold and the pink accents.
Grey — a quiet neutral that lets the intricate decoration carry the design on its own.
Light Green — a gentle garden ground that connects with the evergreen sprigs and keeps the whole thing soft.
Orchid — soft lilac, the most romantic option, sitting close to the pink blooms.
Terracotta — warm clay red-brown, an antique ground that contrasts the blue panels and matches the golden tones.
Actual garment color may vary a little from the images. Every monitor and phone screen renders color differently, and no two people see it quite the same way.
