Garment-Dyed Sweatshirt · Eight Colors · Designed in Colorado
A Buff Orpington and a Barred Rock in the snow, one standing watch, one scratching for corn — the two hens everyone keeps, on the one morning nobody wanted to go out.
Garment-dyed 9.5 oz heavyweight brushed fleece, soft from the first wear.
Two hens on a patch of trodden snow. The Buff Orpington stands tall and golden, head up, snow still sitting on her back where it landed. The Barred Rock has her head down, one foot raised mid-scratch, working the cracked corn out of the snow — every black-and-white bar on her painted in. Three-toed tracks behind them, a few kernels of yellow corn in front, and nothing else: no coop, no fence, no painted background, so the shirt color is the winter sky over the run. Watercolor on soft paper grain. No text, no slogan.
The Design
Large front-centered chest print — not a back print
Subject: a Buff Orpington hen and a Barred Plymouth Rock hen in the snow, with tracks and scattered corn
Style: watercolor farm-animal illustration with soft paper grain — the breeds are right, and nobody is wearing a scarf
No text. There is no lettering, slogan or wordmark anywhere in this design
Technique: a printed graphic — the ink sits in the fleece, straight onto the garment color with no background panel, and nothing is stitched or sewn on
Shown in White. The print runs large and centered on the chest, straight onto the garment color — no panel, no frame, not a back print.
Anyone who keeps chickens knows the snow does not change the schedule. They still have to be let out at first light, the water is still frozen, and the hens still come down the ramp like it is a personal insult — then stand in the one trodden patch and wait for you to produce the corn. The Buff Orpington will stand in it all morning, unbothered. The Barred Rock will find the kernel you dropped yesterday. This is that patch, on that morning.
The Story Behind It
✦ ✦ ✦
The first winter with chickens, she read everything. Heat lamps, no heat lamps. Deep litter. Petroleum jelly on the combs. She lay awake the night of the first hard freeze certain she would find them stiff in the morning, and went out at six in her husband's boots with a kettle of hot water for the drinker.
They were fine. Goldie, the Buff Orpington, was already out in the snow with it piled on her back like she had been there an hour, and Pepper, the Barred Rock, was behind her scratching for the corn from the day before. They looked at her, and at the kettle, and at the empty hand that should have had the scratch in it.
That was nine winters ago. She still goes out at six. She stopped reading.
✦ ✦ ✦
Wear it for the six a.m. kettle run, and for the two who were out before you.
A gift for the backyard chicken keeper, the one with the heated waterer and opinions about it, the friend who names her hens after spices, or anyone whose December mornings start in the run. It is a winter design without being a Christmas joke — no scarves on the chickens, no lights, no lettering — so it goes on in November and keeps going until the mud comes back. Pair it with the Rooster Farmhouse Tee, the one who was up before any of them.

80% ring-spun US cotton, 20% polyester, 9.5 oz heavyweight — substantial, and warm enough to be the layer rather than something under one

The graphic will not crack or peel. It is printed flat into the face of the fleece — no heavy vinyl patch, no rubbery texture, nothing to pull loose
Choosing a Color
The design is golden buff, black-and-white barring, red combs and a patch of snow — and no painted background, so the shirt color is the winter sky over the run.
Blue Spruce. Deep evergreen. The gold hen glows on it and the snow goes bright — the one to start with.
Blue Jean. A light washed denim. Chickens on blue is the classic farm pairing, and the one on the hero photo.
Denim. Deep washed blue, the darkest of the blues. The buff and the snow do the work; the barring settles in.
Pepper. A soft washed black, closer to charcoal. The snow patch and the gold hen jump; the Barred Rock becomes a texture.
Grey. A soft heathered grey. Winter daylight — both hens read clearly, and it wears with everything.
Chambray. The palest washed blue — the hens against a cold morning sky.
Light Green. A soft washed sage. Quiet and farmhouse; the buff sits warmly in it.
White. The crispest of the eight — snow on snow, every bar on the Barred Rock outlined.
Garment-dyed colors look softer and more muted in person than on a screen, and each piece varies slightly. That lived-in tone is part of the charm.
