Every piece from The Known Pack is printed to order in the USA on garment-dyed Comfort Colors blanks, using direct-to-garment printing with water-based inks. Here is the whole process, plainly.
The art
Every design is original artwork created for The Known Pack in Colorado. Our birds, butterflies and flowers are painted as watercolor illustrations of real species — a Great Horned Owl looks like a Great Horned Owl, a Black-capped Chickadee has its black cap — because the people who wear them know the difference. There is no lettering on our designs; the picture is the point.
The blank
We print on Comfort Colors garment-dyed blanks: the 1717 tee (6.1 oz, 100% ring-spun cotton) and the 1566 crewneck and 1567 hoodie (9.5 oz, 80% ring-spun cotton / 20% polyester fleece). Garment-dyed means the finished shirt is dyed after it is sewn, which gives the soft, washed, pigment-dyed color that Comfort Colors is known for. We chose them for how they feel after the tenth wash, not the first. Read more about why we print on the 1717 and why we use Comfort Colors fleece.
The print
The artwork is printed direct-to-garment on Kornit printers with water-based inks. The ink goes into the cotton fibers rather than sitting on top as a film, so there is no patch, no raised square and no cracking. It is the method that suits watercolor: soft edges stay soft, and the fabric still breathes through the print.
Who prints it, and where
Printing is done by our US-based print partners, to order, one shirt at a time. We do not hold a warehouse of pre-printed stock. Making each piece when it is ordered means nothing is printed that nobody wanted, and it is why every design can be offered in every size and color.
How long it takes
Most orders are printed within 2–5 business days and arrive 3–5 business days after that, so plan on 6–10 business days from order to doorstep within the US. Shipping is free on every US order, no minimum. During the holiday season we post an order-by date for Christmas delivery on every product page.
Wash cold, inside out. Tumble dry low or hang. No bleach, no high heat, and keep the iron off the artwork. Garment-dyed cotton can shrink slightly; if you are between sizes, size up.

I like the shirt overall. The design looks nice and it’s pretty comfortable, although the fit was a little different than I expected. The material is decent and I’ve worn it a few times already. I’m happy with it.
