Garment-Dyed Sweatshirt · Fourteen Colors
Three dogs, one wreath, and an hour of very good behaviour.
Garment-dyed 9.5 oz heavyweight fleece, soft from the first wear.
Three dogs sitting shoulder to shoulder inside a Christmas wreath. A golden retriever on the left in a red scarf printed with white snowflakes, a black-and-white spaniel in the middle with long ears and a green bow, and a small tan-and-white terrier on the right in a red plaid bandana. The wreath arches over them in deep evergreen, hung with a red tartan bow, a gold bell, pinecones and red berries. Wrapped presents are banked across the foreground, and a red bauble sits among them. Painted in full colour, printed large and centered on the chest.
The Design
Large front-centered chest print — not a back print
Style: a full-colour painted illustration — richly shaded, with the dogs and the greenery rendered in detail rather than drawn in outline
Technique: a printed graphic — the ink sits in the fleece, straight onto the garment color with no background panel, and nothing is stitched or sewn on

The wreath is doing the oldest job in midwinter decoration, and there is real botany behind it. A broadleaf tree drops its leaves in autumn because wide, thin leaves lose water faster than frozen ground can replace it. A conifer solves the same problem differently: its leaves are reduced to needles, with very little surface area, a thick waxy cuticle to seal moisture in, and sugars and proteins in the cells that act as a kind of antifreeze. The result is that a spruce or a fir can hold its foliage straight through a hard winter, and photosynthesise on any mild day that comes along. People noticed the consequence long before anyone could explain the cause — that one kind of tree simply refused to die back — and cut boughs of it to hang over the door in the darkest weeks. The wreath came first; the explanation took a few thousand years.
The Story Behind It
✦ ✦ ✦
The rule in that house was that nobody touches anything until everyone is downstairs.
Which is a rule for people. The dogs came down at half past five with the first person awake, worked out what was under the tree within about four seconds, and then — and this is the part nobody can explain — sat down in front of it and waited.
All three of them. In a row. For nearly an hour, while the kettle went on and the rest of the house slowly surfaced, occasionally glancing back at the stairs to see whether anybody was coming.
They had been told to wait. Everyone agreed afterwards that they had never once been that good about anything else.
✦ ✦ ✦
Wear it for the hour before anybody else is awake.
The same wreath carried across fourteen garment-dyed grounds.
A thoughtful gift for anyone whose dogs are part of Christmas morning — retriever people, spaniel people, small-scruffy-terrier people, and everyone who buys their dog a present and pretends it was from someone else.

Choosing a Color
White. Shows the artwork with nothing held back — every pale tone in the greenery and the gift papers survives. The clearest of the fourteen.
Grey. Soft neutral grey, and the one we would pick. The reds and greens lift off it without the white of the design disappearing.
Butter, Chalky Mint, Light Green. Pale and warm or pale and cool. The wreath sits very naturally on the two greens.
Chambray, Blue Jean, Denim. Washed blues, light through to mid. Denim is the deepest and the most wintry of the three.
Orchid, Watermelon. Soft lilac and bright pink. The least traditional pair here, and the most fun.
Terracotta. Warm clay, and the closest thing to an autumn-into-winter ground. Available in L, 2XL and 3XL only.
Crimson, Blue Spruce, Pepper. The three dark grounds. Honest note: this is a full-colour painting, so the pale cream and gold in the gifts and the dogs’ coats read softer on these than they do on White or Grey. Crimson is the most festive of them; Pepper the most dramatic.
Garment-dyed color varies a little from piece to piece, and every screen renders it differently. Treat the images as close rather than exact. See all fourteen shades →
