Nothing in that bed was planted for him. He uses all of it.
Garment-dyed 9.5 oz heavyweight fleece, soft from the first wear.
A grey-and-white cat sits down inside a flowerbed and looks straight out of it. Blue and periwinkle hydrangea heads crowd in around him, cream-white roses open to either side, and silver-green eucalyptus and small white blossom fill the gaps. Only his head, chest and two front paws clear the flowers. The planting is not a frame around the cat — he is down in it, at flower height, with the bed closing over his shoulders.
The Design
Large front-centered chest print — not a back print
Style: vintage botanical illustration — fine petal, leaf and fur detail with layered, softly shaded colour rather than a flat modern graphic
Technique: a printed graphic, not embroidery and not an applique patch
A grey-and-white cat in the tuxedo pattern — charcoal-grey mask and ears, a white blaze running down the face, white muzzle, white chest and white front paws
He is centred and face-on, eyes open and level, sitting low with only head, chest and paws above the planting
Mophead hydrangeas in blue and periwinkle, several full heads, massed to his left and right and closing behind his shoulders
Cream-white roses, fully open, two to each side, with tight buds between them
Rounded silver-green eucalyptus leaves and small white blossom filling the spaces, with the foliage spreading wider than the flowers
Printed straight onto the garment color, with no panel, badge or frame behind the artwork
No words or lettering anywhere in the design
The same illustration carried across ten garment-dyed grounds.
The blue is not the plant's decision. A hydrangea makes blue only where the soil is acid enough to free up aluminium for the roots to take in — the aluminium binds to a pigment in the petals and turns it blue; in limier ground it stays locked in the soil and the same plant flowers pink. Move it, or lime the bed, and it changes colour. The other half of the trick is that the big showy heads are not petals at all. They are sepals, and they are sterile. The real flowers are the tiny unremarkable ones buried in the middle, and everything we grow hydrangeas for is the packaging around them.
The Story Behind It
✦ ✦ ✦
The hydrangeas went in along the north wall because that was the only part of the garden that stayed cool all afternoon, which is also the reason he found them.
He is not a gardener's cat. He does not follow her down the path or sit on the bag of compost. He simply disappears for most of July, and if she stands at the kitchen window long enough she can work out where he is from the one head of flowers that is moving.
She tried putting a bed for him in the shade by the back door the first summer. He looked at it, and he went back into the flowers.
Two stems broke that year and she staked them. Now she plants an extra one at the end of the row every spring and does not tell anybody why.
✦ ✦ ✦
Wear it for the ones who plant the extra one.
The print runs large and centered on the chest, straight onto the garment color — no panel, no frame, not a back print.
A thoughtful gift for cat people with gardens, hydrangea growers, anyone who has given up a flowerbed to an animal, and the person who plants the extra one.

Choosing a Color
Blue Spruce. Deep botanical green, and the only genuinely dark ground in the run. The eucalyptus sinks into it and the blue hydrangeas lift forward — closest to looking at the plant in shade.
Butter. Soft warm yellow. It turns the cream roses to clotted cream and makes the blue read cooler by contrast.
Chalky Mint. Pale green-grey. The quietest ground here, and the one where the eucalyptus almost belongs to the shirt rather than the print.
Chambray. Light blue. The hydrangeas sit closest to the garment color on this one — the cream roses and the cat do the separating.
Denim. Washed mid-blue, deeper than Chambray. The cat's white chest and the cream roses are what carry the picture.
Grey. Neutral heather grey. The most everyday of the ten, and the one where the cat's own grey-and-white reads most natural.
Orchid. Soft lilac-pink. Unexpected beside the blue, and the one that leans most decorative.
Watermelon. Warm coral pink, and the boldest ground in the run. Maximum contrast against the blue — it reads like a summer poster.
White. Clean and bright, the way a botanical plate is printed. Every blue and green is at full strength and nothing is tinted.
Terracotta. Warm clay orange. Rich against the blue, and the one ground that makes the hydrangeas look almost violet.
Two honest notes. Blue Spruce is the only genuinely dark ground in this run — the other nine are light or mid-toned, and the design was drawn to work on pale grounds, so this is a light-shirt design with one dark option rather than the other way round. And Terracotta runs L to 3XL only; it is not made in S or M.
Actual garment color may vary a little from the images. Every monitor and phone screen renders color differently, and no two people see it quite the same way.
Sizing
