Garment-Dyed Sweatshirt · Four Dark Colors
The light goes early. Nobody minds.
Garment-dyed 9.5 oz heavyweight fleece, soft from the first wear.
A whole village, drawn in white line only. Seven or eight houses with steep gabled roofs and carved eaves, packed shoulder to shoulder and stepped up toward the middle so the row makes a low hill. Snow sits along every roofline and banks up around the doors. Pines push up between the houses and close the gaps behind them, and one large snowflake hangs directly over the centre of the village with smaller ones scattered out to either side.
The Design
Large front-centered chest print — not a back print
Style: white single-colour line art — a folk-art village scene drawn in fine outline, with no fill, no shading and no second ink colour anywhere in it
Technique: a printed graphic — the ink sits in the fleece, straight onto the garment color with no background panel, and nothing is stitched or sewn on
Flat white ink only — no foil, no glitter, no metallic and no raised puff print
Seven or eight narrow houses with steep gabled roofs, arched doors, small windows and decorative trim along the eaves
The houses are stepped up toward the centre so the whole village reads as a low mound rather than a flat row
Conifers between and behind the buildings, filling the gaps and closing the back of the scene
One large many-pointed snowflake centred above the tallest roof, with smaller flakes scattered out to the left and right
Snow drawn along every roofline and drifted across the ground beneath the houses
Printed straight onto the garment color, with no panel, badge or frame behind the artwork
No words or lettering anywhere in the design
The same drawing carried across four dark garment-dyed grounds.
The snowflake over the village is doing something specific. In 1936 a Japanese physicist, Ukichiro Nakaya, grew the first artificial snow crystal in a laboratory in Hokkaido — on a rabbit hair, as it turned out, because nothing else would hold one. Over the next decade he worked out that the shape a crystal takes is set almost entirely by the temperature and the humidity it passed through on the way down: plates at one temperature, needles at another, the big six-armed stars only in a narrow band around minus fifteen. Which means the shape is readable. Nakaya put it better than anyone has since: a snow crystal, he said, is a letter sent from the sky.
The Story Behind It
✦ ✦ ✦
By the second week of December the valley loses the sun behind the ridge at about ten past three, and it is properly dark before four.
People who move there complain about it for one winter. The second winter they stop, because they have worked out what everybody already living there knows: the day simply ends earlier, and what is on the other side of it is not a problem.
Lights go on in one house, then the next, then the one at the end with the crooked chimney. From the road below it happens in a rough order, the same order every evening, and it takes about twenty minutes.
Nobody is going anywhere else. That is the whole of it, and it is the best hour of the day.
✦ ✦ ✦
Wear it for the short days and the early lights.
The print runs large and centered on the chest, straight onto the garment color — no panel, no frame, not a back print.
A thoughtful gift for anyone who likes December better than July, people who put the lamps on at four, and the ones who would rather be in a small place in the snow than anywhere warmer.

Choosing a Color
Blue Spruce. Deep botanical green. The closest thing here to standing among the trees in the picture — the pines in the design and the shirt are the same idea.
Crimson. Deep true red, and the loudest of the four. The most openly festive, and the one ground where the white reads warm rather than cold.
Denim. Washed mid-blue — the lightest ground in the run, and the one that reads most like dusk rather than full night.
Pepper. Deep charcoal, and the one the drawing was made for. The white sits hardest against it and the snow looks like snow.
One honest note, and it is the point of this one. Every ground in this run is dark or mid-toned, and there is no white, cream or pale option at all. That is deliberate rather than an omission — the drawing is white ink and nothing else, so a pale shirt would leave it with nothing to sit against. If you want this design on a light garment, it is not this product.
Actual garment color may vary a little from the images. Every monitor and phone screen renders color differently, and no two people see it quite the same way.
Sizing
A relaxed unisex cut that most people wear true to size. Size down one for a closer fit.
Adult sizes only, S to 3XL. Between sizes? We’ll make it right, free.
Care
